As you approach mid-life, it’s not uncommon to feel you’ve lost your spark. As years go by, doing what genuinely lights you up may seem like a distant memory.
You can’t put your finger on it, but you sense something is missing.
Maybe you've tried a lot of things to incite change: a healthier diet, positive affirmations, regular exercise – which are all great, but might take too much effort and are difficult to sustain.
To make things even more challenging, society encourages quick-fix external gratifications, ones that only give temporary satisfaction. You order that new thing on Amazon, but deep down you wonder, “Did I even really need it?”
Without creativity, joy gets sucked out of our life and we find ourselves in a rut. Creativity is an inside-out approach to joy. Joy is a super power that infuses levity and emotional resilience into our day to day lives.
I've had periods of my life where I've been completely overwhelmed. I was like a raw nerve, easily triggered and sent spiraling into frustration, irritation or anxiety. I discovered creativity or "flow state" breaks up these negative emotions.
Creativity gives relief by quieting the analytical part of the brain (otherwise known as the pre-frontal cortex). At the same time, creativity awakens the brain's pleasure center, activating dopamine – the feel good hormone – which boosts joy and satisfaction. These higher level emotions empower us which fuels our motivation to design the life of our dreams.
